If you liked the Lomo… you will love Holga

We talked about the Lomo plug-in for Gimp the other day. Poking around on the Gimp Plug-in registry, I found another one along the same line that mimics a Holga.

Holgas are cheap Chinese Medium Formats camera that are affected by about every optical default you can think of. Just like the Lomo, this was bound to create a momentum with artists using these cameras and that is exacly what happened.

Check the wikipedia article about Holga and a gallery at Holga.net.

Now since it is quite easy to degrade a photo there is a Holga plugin for the Gimp that does a bit more than the Lomo one – blurring, a fairly sophisticated vignetting addition as well as a borders.

This is our base image for that type of creative work:

Here is what is spit out of the Dana-Holga2b plug-in. I just moved the stretch value to 0 to avoid an image resizing – and artifacts in the oblique lines in the front. Remember this is about serious photography…

All in all, this looks like a very realistic view of what you would expect from a plastic medium format. I love digital photography🙂

Oddly enough, you seem to get some of these effects by keeping your 35mm slides in a box in the basement for many years.

    Hey Tudza,

This will nominate you for the “best comment” award. Not sure about the prize, yet🙂

    Take care,

    Joel
