Richard Hughes is next in line to become another hero of Open Source Software for photography. After giving it some thoughts, he implemented a first draft of a Gnome Color Manager. It lives in Gnome GIT for now so it is not quite ready for prime time, but hey, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” (ref)

Looks really nice. I am curious as to why some people seemed to want this at the application level instead of built into the system/desktop itself. Is there a good reason to prefer app level support? Maybe the color profile needs to change with the colorspace of the image? If that’s the case, hopefully we get some API hooks for gnome color manager.

Application working in higher dynamic ranges than standard 8-bit would need to control the CMS, to avoid losing resolution.
It should also be noted that there is binary blob firmware required to load that model.
